What Is Work-Based Learning?
Work-Based Learning (WBL) connects high school students with hands-on workplace experiences that build confidence, develop professional skills, and prepares them for high-demand careers in right here in Eastern Kentucky.
Through Rural Up, students gain access to internships, career exploration, and professional mentoring while earning experience that supports their future education and employment goals.

Rural Up's 2026 Summer Work-Based Learning Program connected 71 Eastern Kentucky high school students with paid internship opportunities across 5 counties. Through partnerships with 35 local employers, student completed more than 15,445 hours of real-world experience, averaging approximately 217.55 hours per intern. These hands-on experiences gave students opportunities to develop professional and durable skills, explore career pathways, build confidence and gain a better understanding of what it takes to succeed in the workplace. The program also reflects the power of collaboration among students, employers, schools, and community partners to strengthen the connection between education and future careers across Eastern Kentucky.
